September Wedding Cake

This is the first time I have made a cake of this magnitude with three children in my care, and it was hard! I may have to rethink doing anything larger than a simple wedding cake next time, but I was glad to have the chance to do this one. I loved the way it turned out. The fresh flowers added on by Diane Roehr really completed the cake and made it lovely. The bride loved it too which is obviously the most important thing. The wedding had 270 guests attending, so in addition to the ceremonial cake, I also made sheet cakes. I hope that everyone got a slice that wanted one. I think sometimes the people in charge of cutting cakes are a little too generous. I haven't heard otherwise yet. There were three flavors: lemon with lemon curd and raspberry preserve, chocolate with buttercream, and red velvet with cream cheese frosting. All were covered in buttercream.
What my car looked like transporting the cakes to the church.
The final result. The fresh flowers add so much. I was glad the florist came to decorate. She did a much better job than I could have done had she just left the flowers!

Sweetheart Cake July 2014

This past Saturday I was asked to create a sweetheart cake (along with some sheet cakes) for a wedding. I didn't take any pictures of the completed sheet cakes because they weren't anything fancy, but the bride chose rather patriotic berries for the cake which made for a beautiful composition inside. I did take a picture of that. I was worried about the sweetheart cake melting in the heat--it was an early evening wedding, but it was still 90-something degrees outside where the cake was sitting. Thankfully I hear everything went smoothly and the sheet cakes were enjoyed by the guests :). That's always a good thing!

Gray and Yellow Baby Shower

Last Saturday was my sister-in-law's baby shower. She is having a little boy. They don't have a name picked out yet, but I decided to put an "L" on the cake in honor of their last name. In addition to gray and yellow, she also had a bit of an elephant theme going on, hence the elephant on the cake. I love the way the cake turned out. The cutouts and polka dots are fondant. The rest of the cake is covered in buttercream. The cake itself was chocolate with a peanut butter frosting filling.

Safari Baby Shower Cake

This past weekend I got to make yet another baby shower cake. 'Tis the season. I have another one for my sister-in-law coming up at the end of June! The theme for the shower was "Safari", so I made some fondant animals to top the cake. The cake was a lemon cake with lemon cream cheese frosting and lemon curd in the middle, topped with a basic buttercream frosting. The animals and trees are fondant.

Baby Girl Shower Cake

I had the privilege of making a cake for the baby shower of my friend Priscilla this past Saturday. She's having a girl, and since I had another girl of my own just 8 weeks ago, I was inspired. The cake was a fondant covered white cake with a whipped cream and strawberry filling. I had a fun time with this one :).

Basket Weave Wedding Cake

Today's wedding cake was a 3-tiered basket weave wedding cake. The filling was fresh blackberries and raspberries with whipped cream. The frosting was a traditional buttercream icing and the cake was a simple white cake. I stuck around until the end of the wedding to retrieve my cake stand, so I did get to taste a little bit when I cleaned that. I really liked the way it turned out. The cake flavors were the bride's choosing. She chose wonderfully. I might just have to make it again--maybe soon since I bought more berries than I actually needed. I was very pleased with how the basket weave looked. I've made basket weave cakes before, but never in such a grand way. I have to admit that it did get a bit sloppy the later into the night I was up decorating, but buttercream is very forgiving :). The flowers on the cake are peonies. The bride and her mother picked those up in the flower district downtown. And in case you are wondering why there are Russian dolls on the cake table, the bride grew up in Russia. In fact her whole family flew out from Moscow to come to the wedding. I should be getting photos of the cake after it was sliced if you are interested in seeing the inside. It looked very patriotic with the berries and whipped cream.

Alice in Wonderland Baby Shower Cake

I made my second Alice in Wonderland themed cake this past weekend for my sister-in-law's baby shower. It was fun to take different elements from the story and incorporate it on a cake. The cake was yellow with a whipped cream and fresh strawberry filling. It was delicious! I had fun with this one :).
